Man & Development (ISSN 0258-0438) is a peer-reviewed, quarterly multidisciplinary social science journal published by the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID), Chandigarh, since May 1979. The inaugural issue was released by the then President of India, His Excellency Mr. N. Sanjiva Reddy. The journal has maintained uninterrupted publication for over 45 years, making it one of the longstanding platforms for development studies in India.

Focus and Scope

The journal is dedicated to critical inquiry into the processes of social, economic, political, and cultural transformation in India and the wider Global South. It encourages scholarship that:

• Examines contemporary development challenges.
• Explores the relevance of India’s historical and civilizational heritage to present-day concerns.
• Situates local and national processes within global dynamics.
• Bridges micro-level empirical studies with macro-level policy analysis.

True to its name, Man & Development places people at the centre of development discourse, emphasising inclusive, equitable, and sustainable approaches. Recent issues have featured research on themes such as employment and occupational patterns, agricultural labour markets, socio-economic policy assessment, climate change adaptation, informal sector conditions, and rural-urban dynamics.

Contribution and Reach

Over the decades, Man & Development has published contributions from a diverse community of scholars, researchers, thinkers, administrators, policymakers, and practitioners. It serves as an important forum for evidence-based analysis and policy-oriented research relevant to India’s development trajectory. The journal is published in March, June, September, and December. It reaches academic institutions, libraries, research organisations, and policymakers in India and abroad (with around 400 copies distributed per issue and exchanges with other reputed journals).

The journal has benefited from the guidance of distinguished editors, including Padma Bhushan awardee Professor S.S. Johl (current Editor-in-Chief).
